This simple Greek meatballs recipe is a great lunch or dinner idea for those with little time to prepare and cook.

Ingredients

Meatball Sauce

  • 700 grams tomato passata
  • 1 brown onion
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

Meatballs

  • 500 grams lean minced lamb
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 spring onion diced
  • ¼ cup wholemeal breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 100 g low fat feta cheese
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ cup grated carrot
  • ½ cup grated zucchini
  • ½ lemon juiced
  • 2 Tbsp parsley coarsely chopped

Instructions

Meatball Sauce

  1. Dice onion
  2. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. When warm, add garlic and onion to the pan and gently Saute.
  4. When onion has started to turn transparent, add the passata, tomato paste and cinnamon.
  5. Stir well then bring to the boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes while you make the meatballs.

Meatballs

  1. Dice spring onion
  2. Grate carrot and zuchini.
  3. Place all meatballs ingredients except olive oil into a large bowl, juice lemon over top.
  4. Mix everything until well combined.
  5. Roll into balls - See notes
  6. Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  7. Add meatballs and gently fry until golden.

Notes

Greek Meatballs Serving Suggestions

  • Place meatballs on a plate and spoon sauce over.
    Add a summer salad and sliced buttered french bread.
  • Cook 250g Spaghetti to Al dente.
    Using tongs mound a layer of spaghetti on the plate.
    Spoon meatballs and sauce over spaghetti.
  • Put toothpicks into meatballs and serve with your greek meatballs sauce as a fingerfood.
