Equipment
- Frying pan or skillet,
- Small bowl
- Tongs
- Sharp knife
- Paper towels
Ingredients
- 350g block tofu extra-firm
- 2 tsp ginger minced
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce low-sodium
- 2 Tbsp mirin
- 4 tsp maple syrup sugar-free
- ½ cup water
- 2 Tbsp spring onions chopped
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Drain the 350g block tofu, and cut into two large steaks by slicing the block in half lengthwise.
- Wrap the tofu in a paper towel and place it on a plate with another plate on top of the tofu to drain the excess water. Leave for about 10 minutes.
- Stir together 1/2 cup water, 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp mirin, 4 tsp maple syrup, , 2 Tbsp sesame oil, and 2 tsp ginger in a bowl.
- Heat some oil in a pan on high heat and cook the tofu until seared on both sides.
- Pour the sauce over the tofu in the pan until the sauce has reduced/evaporated a little.
- Pour in teriyaki sauce mixture and simmer into a glaze.
- Top with 2 tsp sesame seeds and 2 Tbsp spring onions

- Serve the tofu on top of a bed of steamed rice and drizzle the extra sauce on top.
- This savoury breakfast rice goes very well with this tofu steak.
- It’s wonderful served alongside baby potatoes and vegetables.
- It would also be wonderful alongside vegan mashed potatoes or vegan scalloped potatoes or baked potato fries.
