When a mother is breastfeeding, she should always have a balanced and healthy diet while taking in lots of fluids to be able to produce more breast milk. Good food to eat when you are breastfeeding should have all the complete and basic food groups like calcium, iron, protein and other vitamins. More calories are required by breastfeeding mothers than would a new mother who doesn’t breastfeed. A breastfeeding mother’s diet should have 2700 kcal per day. But after weaning from breastfeeding, calorie intake should be reduced to only 1800kcal per day. Commonly, you would feel thirstier; therefore, it is important that you increase water intake to quench that thirst. Drink a glass before and after you breastfeed as well.
Good food to eat when breastfeeding should be decided by the quality and not the quantity of the food. Here is an example of healthy daily diet:
- 50% grain (examples are wheat germs, oatmeal and cereals)
- 20% vegetable, beans, peas. This includes carrots, pumpkins, spinach and certain green vegetables, sweet potatoes, red beans, kidney beans, tomatoes, pinto beans, etc.
- 10% fruits like grapefruit, oranges, bananas and prunes
- 10% seeds, seaweed and various nuts like pine nuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanut butter, and hazelnuts.
- 10% meat and fish including pork, lamb, oysters, cod, halibut, lean beef, shrimp, clams, halibut, etc)
- Low-fat mike or fat-free yogurt can also be included in the diet.
Mothers who breastfeed must always be aware of the intake of food they eat since all of this food would pass into the breast milk. Good food to eat when breastfeeding should always be balanced and healthy. Avoid spicy foods, ginger, vinegar and sesame oil.
When breastfeeding your baby, remember that your diet should have extra calories so you have to be sure that the food you eat will have the essential nutrients needed. Good food to eat when breastfeeding will always be foods that would help you be healthy and have a stress-free pregnancy.
